1931 Society Cincinnati Virginia Chapter AE Medal Yorktown Surrender Tschudin MS

  • $ 1,277.00

Description: A beautiful mint state bronze presentation medal issued in 1931 by the Virginia Chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati. The medal which is ~54.5 mm in diameter and weighs about 69.6 grams, depicts the Society's logo on the obverse surrounded by the legend "PRESENTED by the SOCIETY of the CINCINNATI in the STATE of VIRGINIA" along the edge. The reverse depicts a scene of the surrender at Yorktown (adapted from Rendition de l'armée du Lord Cornwallis by François Godefroy): Comte de Rochambeau standing facing, directing General Charles O'Hara (to right, in lieu of the ill Cornwallis) to surrender the sword of Cornwallis to General George Washington (to left) in the center. The scene is surrounded by four portraits left and right as well as top and bottom. These are the portraits of Washington, DeGrasse, Lafayette, and Rochambeau. The medal was designed by R. Tschudin and struck in Paris. The medal was used as a presentation medal by the Society in 1931 which was the Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Yorktown. The medal is marked Tschudin in the bottom of the reverse to the right of the of the bottom portrait. Again, the medal was designed by Tschudin. It weighs ~69.6 grams and measures ~54.5 mm in diameter. The medal has a plain edge. This is a beautiful and substantial medal that is hard to come by and would make a great addition to your collection.
