1861 Gold Colored Portrait Medal John Brown The State of Kansas Sunflower State

  • $ 77.77

Description: A beautiful about uncirculated gold colored (possibly brass plated) portrait medal depicting the bust of John Brown the famous abolitionist looking left on the obverse. The obverse also has the name JOHN BROWN on top of the bust and the date 1861 below it. The words AD ASTRA PER ASPERA, which translate to "To the stars through difficulties" are in front of the bust. The reverse shows the map of Kansas with a flower in its center and the legend "THE STATE OF KANSAS SUNFLOWER STATE" surrounding the map. The medal has remnants of gold coloring on both sides, which most likely has been lost over time. It weighs ~23.2 grams and measures ~37.5 mm in diameter.
