1899 Beautiful Bronze Medal Provincial Exposition of East Flanders Ghent Belgium By LeMaire

  • $ 77.99

Description: A nice about uncirculated or much better1899 bronze medal. The medal which was designed by Le Maire was struck to commemorate 1899 East Flanders Provincial Exposition. The obverse of the medal depicts a crowned lady in long dress sitting with her arm resting on a shield and a lion resting its head on her lap in high relief. The obverse also shows a fence, towers and stacks with smoke in the back ground. The obverse has no legend but is signed "LE MAIRE" below the woman. The reverse has the central legend indicating that the medal commemorates the "1899 East Flanders Provincial Exposition in Gent, Gand or Ghent" in both French and Flemish. There is also French words "TEMOIGNAGE DE RECONNAISSANCE" or Testimony of Recognition along the edge of the reverse with the same testimony in Flemish all along the edge. The medal measures ~50 mm in diameter and weighs ~41.6 grams. Please carefully review the scan as it is part and parcel of our description.

Date: The medal is dated 1988.

Mint: Uncertain, but most likely Belgium or France.

Size and Weight: The medal measures about 50 mm in diameter and weighs ~41.6 gm.

Condition: This is a great looking medal that is rather uncommon. We have attempted to find it in many of the references we have and on the internet, but we were unable to do that. The design on the obverse appears to be a common design developed by Le Maire, but the reverse commemorating the exposition is rare. I would grade the coin as about uncirculated or better with all the details being very well preserved with minimum wear, if any. The medal has a few minor stains to both the obverse and reverse and some uneven toning, which can be seen in the scans. The medal is all original, looks great, and would make a great addition to your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
