Description: A beautiful uncirculated silver papal annual medal commemorating the inauguration of the new Seminary of St. John Lateran. This is an architectural medal with the rendition of the building of the seminary on the reverse. This annual medal represents the year 11 medal of pope Pius 10 papacy and is listed in Piero De Luca's book as number 32 with a rarity index "R". The obverse, which is signed Bianchi, depicts the bust of the pope Pius X facing left with the legend "PIVS.X.PONT.MAX.AN.XI" along the edge. The obverse has the inscription "BIANCHI" below the pontiff's bust. The reverse shows the image of the large new building of the seminary next to the Basilica of St. John Lateran. There is the inscription "ALUMINS.SACRI.ORDINIS. AD.VETEREM.KLERI.ROM.GLOR.EDUCENDIS." which translates to "To lead the young clergymen to the ancient glories of Roman Clergy" below the building in three lines in exergue. There is also the inscription on the bottom edge of the image to the left "C.SNEIDER.ARCH." or Architect C. Sneider. The medal weighs ~41.5 grams and measures ~43.5 mm in diameter. The medal has a plain edge with no markings. This is a beautiful darkly toned medal with a nice portrait of the Pontiff. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1914 Anno XI for pope Pius X (year 11 of his papacy).

Mint: Rome.

Size and weight: The Medal weighs ~41.5 grams and measures ~43.5 mm in diameter.

References: De Luca 32 and Mazio 873.

Condition: I would grade the medal as uncirculated condition with no observable wear and nice eye appeal. The medal is darkly toned on both obverse and reverse and along the edges with the center of the obverse retaining clarity and some luster. It does have some minor blemishes but is in a well-preserved sate. The details of the medal are extremely well expressed. The medal has a nice portrait of the Pontiff with no observable wear and great preservation of the details. The details of the scene on the reverse including the details of building are also very well preserved and look great. It is rather dark throughout with reddish coloration along the edges of both sides. A beautiful medal which is over 100 years old and still in great condition. It would make a nice addition to your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
