1941 Medal Society Of Medalists 24th Issue Arctic-Antarctic Erwin Springweiler

Description: A nice large and heavy bronze medal from 1941. This is the Society of Medalists twenty fourth issue medal. The high relief medal shows a polar bear on the obverse with flying snow geese with the word ARCTIC in the upper field above the bear. The names of Arctic explorer "GREELY*BARTLETT*PEARY*BYRD*" are shown along the edge. The reverse shows a group of four penguins standing with the word "ANTARCTIC" below them and the names of explorer "PALMER*WILKES*BYRD*ELSWORTH*" surrounding the design along the edge. There is also the notation E.F.S. (c) (For Erwin Frederick Springweiler, below the word ANTARCTIC on the reverse. The edge of the medal is marked "The Society of Medalists Twenty Fourth Issue-1941-Erwin F. Springweiler Sculptor" and then "Medallic Art Co. N.Y. Bronze". A great looking and very interesting medal, by one of America's top wild life artist and medalists to add to your collection. Weight and Size: The medal weighs ~176 grams, is ~73 millimeters in diameter, and ~4.5 millimeters thick at the edge. 

Maker: Medallic Art Company of New York. 

Marks: Marked "The Society of Medalists Twenty Fourth Issue-1941-Erwin F. Springweiler Sculptor" and then "Medallic Art Co. N.Y. Bronze" along the edge of the medal. There is the notation E.F.S. (c) in the lower field of the reverse. 

Condition: The medal is in excellent condition and I would grade it mint state. The medal has no observable wear with minimum surface marks or scratches. It has what I view as beautiful golden matte dark gold patina coloring and is problem free. A great medal to add to your collection.
