c. 1740 Bronze Medal John Milton Paradise Lost Jean Dassier Sculptor Choice XF
Description: A beautiful c. 1740 high relief bronze medal depicting the portrait of John Milton the famous 17th century English poet and civil servant on the obverse. The medal commemorates Milton's famous poem "Paradise Lost". The obverse of the medal has the words "IOANNES MILTON" above the poet's bust along the edge. The reverse shows Adam and Eve under the tree, serpent among the branches, demons entering Paradise, and wolves devouring a flock of sheep. The reverse also has the legend "DIRA DULCE CANIT ALTER HOMERUS." above the Lost Paradise image. There are the letters I.D. in exergue for Jean Dassier the sculptor.
