Undated 1935 Large Bronze Medal The Society Of Medalists 11th Issue By Lorado Taft Homage to the Great Lakes Beautiful About Uncirculated

  • $ 117.77

Description: A nice large and heavy bronze medal from 1935. This is the Society of Medalists eleventh issue medal. The medal's obverse has the image of a woman's head with large aquatic creatures in front of it and the legend "ONTARIO SENDS GREETINGS TO THE SEA" surrounding the image. The reverse shows the image of five maidens gathered together surrounded by the legend ""ONTARIO.MICHIGAN.HURON.SUPERIOR.ERIE..." a reference to the five great lakes. The reverse also has the the artist's mark L.T. (c) in reference to Lorado Taft the sculptor. The edge of the medal is marked "The Society of Medalists Eleventh Issue; Medallic Art Company N.Y." A great looking and very interesting medal to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: The eleventh issue represents the first issue for 1935. Origin: New York, USA.

Artist: Lorado Taft.

Weight and Size: The medal weighs ~172 grams, is ~74 millimeters in diameter, and ~4.5 millimeters thick at the edge.

Maker: Medallic Art Company of New York.

Marks: Marked "The Society of Medalists Eleventh Issue; Medallic Art Company N.Y." along the edge of the medal. There is the notation L.T. with a circled c for copyright on the reverse in the bottom below the design.

Condition: The medal is in excellent condition and if it was a coin I would grade it as about uncirculated or much better (possibly almost mint state). The medal has minimum observable wear if any with minimum surface marks or scratches. It has what I view as beautiful dark chocolate coloring and is problem free. The medal also exhibits signs of verdigris along the edges of the design, which can be seen in the photos. Note that the edge of the medal has the following inscription "The Society of Medalists Eleventh Issue; Medallic Art Company N.Y." which we were not successful in photographing but is there. A great medal to add to your collection. Please view photos for additional condition information and to appreciate the beauty of the piece.
