Egypt Ottoman One Qirsh

1827 AD 1223 AH Year 21 Egyptian One Qirsh Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II Beautiful Extremely Fine Billon Coin

  • $ 169.99

Description: A nicely toned extremely fine or better 1827 (1323 AH/Year 21) One Egyptian Qirsh or Piastre billon coin. The coin, which was struck in Cairo Egypt during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II depicts the sultan's toughra on the obverse. The Toughra is within a circle and has a rose to its right. The circle is surrounded by a wavy border with dots forming a flower within. The reverse indicates that the coin was struck in Misr (Duriba Fee Misr, current day Fustat on the outskirt of Cairo Egypt) with the date 1223 under it. The year 1223 AH is the year Sultan Mahmud II ascended the throne. The number 21 above the letter "Beh" in "Duriba" indicates that the coin was struck in the 21st year of the sultan's reign or 1827 AD. The reverse has the same style border decoration as the obverse. This is a rather rare coin that is not listed in Karuse's Standard Catalog of World Coins in XF grade. This coin is a nice . It is KM 181, made of billon, weighs ~2.8 grams, and measures approximately ~27 mm in diameter. Please carefully review the scan as it is part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1827AD - 1223 AH Year 21.

Mint: Egypt.

Size and Weight: This is a One Qirsh, weighs ~2.8 grams and is ~27 mm in diameter.

References: It is KM #181.

Condition: I would grade this coin as a toned extremely fine or better with all the details being very well preserved. The coin nicely toned and shows wear to the calligraphy especially on the obverse. It also shows some wear to the wavy border design especially near the edge of the coin. It is much better than the scan shows. It does have minor surface scratches and bag marks which can be seen in the scan. The coin has wear commensurate with its age and circulated status. Please see photo for additional condition information.
