Egypt Silver Qirsh

1837 Cairo Egypt Silver Coin Adli or Yeni Qirsh 1223-1255 AH Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II Year 31 XF

  • $ 179.99

Description:  Silver Yeni or Adli Qirsh from Mahmud II, the Ottoman Caliph who ascended the throne in 1808 AD (1223 AH). He ruled the Muslim empire in the period 1223-1255 AH (1808-1839 AD). This silver coin indicates that it was struck in Mahmud's 31st year after ascending the throne which translates to 1837. It depicts Mahmud's toughra on the obverse with the denomination below it and the word Adli to the right. The reverse shows the mint, the year 1223 and the number 31 over the "beh" in the word Duribah. Small silver coins with low denomination and in good condition such as this are rare due to the fact that they have been used extensively and/or melted for the precious metal. Please carefully review the scan presented as it is part and parcel of our description.

Date: This coin was struck in Mahmud's 31st reignal year or 1837.

Mint: Misr or Fustat on the outskirts of Cairo the current capital of Egypt.

Size and Weight: This is a New Adli Altin, weighs about 1.4 grams of 83.3%25 silver and is ~20 mm in diameter.

References: It is KM #183.

Condition: I would grade this coin as good extremely fine and is toned. The coin has soiling and wear commensurate with its age and circulated state. It also has some bag marks and scratches, which do not distract from its beauty and quality. The coin itself is much better than the scan shows with very well defined and legible calligraphy. A definite quality coin. Please see the scan presented for additional condition information.
