Nice 1831-IR Silver Coin Italian Papal State Scudo Pope Gregory XVI ANNO I

  • $ 247.77

Description: A silver coin from the Italian Papal States. This is the 1931 Scudo, introduced by the Benedict XIV pontificate to replace the large traditional Piastra. The coin depicts the image of the bust of pope Gregory XVI facing left on the obverse with the legend "GREGORIVS.XVI.PONT.MAX.AN.I 1831" surrounding the image and the word "NIC. CERRARA" below the pontiff’s bust. The reverse shows two men and two women standing and a baby or child being passed from one of the men to one of the women. The image has the legend "LVMEN AD REVELAION EMGENTIVM" above it and the word "ROMA" in exergue. The coin weighs ~26.3 grams of 0.917 silver and measures ~37.5 mm in diameter. The coin has minimum wear and is nicely toned but exhibits some obvious bumps to the edge and also some minor damage to the rim. This is the rather scarce coin which is difficult to find. It is nicely toned and has great eye appeal. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Condition: For international buyers, please note that the new US postal rates for overseas shipping are very high and we are unable to change them. Additional charges will be incurred depending on the value of the item. Please check the cost of shipping before bidding. I would grade the coin as a nice apparent very fine or much better, possibly about extremely fine. It has all of its well preserved and is nicely tone with good eye appeal. The main problem we see is several edge bumps and some damage to the rim. These can be seen in the phots. Because of that we are selling the coin as is at a fraction of its true value. Please see photo for additional condition information.
