1559-65 Bronze Medal Pope Pius IV Standing Divine Providence Paris Mint Restrike
Description: A nice papal states bronze medal with the image of the bust of Pope Pius IV who was pope in the period 1559-1565 on the obverse. The pope is facing left with the legend "PIVS• III• PONT• OPT• MAX• " surrounding the pontiff's bust along the edge. The reverse of the medal shows a woman standing in a long dress with one exposed breast. She is holding a cornucopia in her left hand and grain ears over a modius in her right hand. The reverse has the legend "PROVIDEN TIA PONT" along the edge surrounding the woman's image and the letters A.R. (Antonio di Rossi) in exergue. This medal is a late 1800s restrike from the Paris Mint as evidenced by the cornucopia and the letters BR on the edge of the medal. The medal is uncirculated with nice eye appeal. The medal has a plain edge marked with a cornucopia followed by the letters BR. A nice-looking medal, which would make a worthy addition to any collection. Date: The medal is a restrike from the late 1800s from more than likely new dies at the time.

Marks: Cornucopia followed by the letters BR on the edge. AR in exergue on the reverse.Reference: Lincoln 589 and Mazio NL. A silver example was sold as Lot 2863 in Leu Numismatik Auction of 11-Sep-2023.
