1780 PR Large Silver Coin Bolivia 8 Reales Carlos III Of Spain Mint Mark PTS XF+
Description: A nice extremely fine or much better 1780 PTS P.R. Bolivian silver coin. This is the Carlos (Charles) III 8 Reales depicting the bust of King Charles I the third of Spain facing right on the obverse. The obverse of this large, silver dollar size coin, has the legend "CAROLUS.III.DEI.GRATIA" surrounding the king's bust and the date 1780 below it. The reverse depicts the crowned arms of Spain between pillars of Hercules with the legend "HESPAN.ET IND.REX" followed by the mint mark as a monogrammed "PTS.8 R. P.R." all surrounding the arms. These coins were used extensively in the US before the silver dollars were circulated. The coin is extremely fine to about uncirculated with some luster and shows all the details very well. This is a nice coin that would make a great addition to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: 1780.
Origin: Bolivia, Potosi.
Weight and Size: The coin is ~39 mm in diameter and weighs ~26.6 grams of 90.3% (0.903) silver.
References: KM#55.
Condition: I would grade the coin as extremely fine or much better with all the details being very well preserved with some minimum wear at the highest points commensurate with its age and circulated state. The coin still displays some luster and is beautiful. It shows quite a bit of the details of the king's facial features and hair and the legends are well preserved, obvious, and very readable. The reverse retains the details of the arms and shows some wear to the bottom of the crown. The inscriptions on the reverse are also very readable and very well preserved. The coin has a few scratches and some bag marks but truly nothing to worry about. All in all, a nice example of this type of rare coin. Please view scan for additional condition information.
