1930 Bronze Medal Society of Medalists 2nd Issue Paul Manship Hail Dionysus

  • $ 299.99

Description: A nice large and heavy bronze medal from 1930. This is the Society of Medalists second issue medal. The obverse of the medal has the image of Dionysus the Greek god of wine. He is crowned with grapes and has an impressive beard. The image is within a circle of dots emanating from a shallow two handled kylix. The image is surrounded by a legend in two lines which says "HAIL*TO*DIONYSUS*WHO*FIRST*DISCOVERED*THE*MAGIC*OF*THE*GRAPE*". The reverse shows two youthful satyrs trampling grapes in some sort or a large bowl. There are grapes and a vine above them. There is the copy right (c) in the bottom of the bowl with the name .P.MANSHIP 1930 below the bowl. The edge of the medal is marked "The Society of Medalists Second Issue-Medallic Art Company N.Y." The medal also has the notation 1963.28.2 in red paint along the edge, which is obviously a museum accession number, making this medal a deaccession from a museum. A great looking and very interesting medal to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
