1940 Society of Medalists 21st Issue Large Silver Plated Medal Edmond Amateis

  • $ 197.77

Description: A nice large and heavy silver plated bronze medal from 1940. This is the Society of Medalists twenty first issue medal. The medal, which is based on Aesop's fables shows a dog looking at his reflection in water on the obvers with the words "LOSE NOT THE SUBSTANCE FOR THE SHADOW" representing the fable "A dog and a shadow". The reverse shows a crowned hawk standing over a dead dove with the words "THE DOVES SELECT A HAWK THEIR KING:" surrounding the image representing the fable "The kite, hawk, and pigeons". The medal is silvery in color and very heavy. It has very high relief and truly pops out of the surface. It has lost some of the surface platting an d has soiling especially along the edge on the reverse but is still great looking. The edge of the medal is marked "THE SOCIETY OF MEDALISTS TWENTY FIRST ISSUE 1940-MEDALLIC ART CO. N.Y. SILVER PLATED. EDMOND AMATEIS SCULPTOR". A great looking and very interesting medal to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Condition: The medal is in excellent condition and if it was a coin, I would grade it as extremely fine to about uncirculated or much better. The medal has minimum wear with minimum surface marks or scratches. It has lost some of the silvery finish to the surface which can be seen in the photos. It also has some soiling along the edge of the reverse between 9 and 12 o'clock. Be that as it may, the medal is great looking and would make aa nice addition to your collection.
