1959 Medal Society of Medalists 59th Issue Apache Buffalo Hunt & Dance by Houser
Description: A nice large and heavy bronze medal from 1959. This is the Society of Medalists 59th issue medal. The medal has the image of an Apache on horseback drawing bow and arrow on running buffalos with hills in the background on the obverse with the legend "APACHE BUFFALO HUNT" above the image. The reverse has the image of a masked male dancer with headdress, wooden swords, and cloth streamers with the legend "APACHE FIRE DANCER" above it. There is also the notation (c) HOUSER near the bottom to the right of the dancer's foot. The medal has a nice red-golden bronze finish with some light tan coloring. The edge of the medal is marked "The Society of Medalists 59th Issue May 1959 Allan Houser S.C." at 12:00 o'clock and the notation "Medallic Art Co. N.Y. Bronze" at 6:00 o'clock. The medal comes in the original issue box with and descriptive booklet describing the medal. A great looking and very interesting medal to add to your collection. Weight and Size: The medal weighs ~182 grams, is ~72.5 millimeters in diameter, and ~5 millimeters thick at the edge.
Maker: Medallic Art Company of New York.
Marks: Marked "The Society of Medalists 59th Issue May 1959 Allan Houser S.C." at 12:00 o'clock and the notation "Medallic Art Co. N.Y. Bronze" at 6:00 o'clock along the edge of the medal. There is also the notation (c) HOUSER near the bottom to the right of the dancer's foot on the reverse.
Condition: The medal is in excellent condition and if it was a coin, I would grade it Mint State. The medal has no apparent wear with minimum surface marks or scratches if any. It has what I view as beautiful red-golden bronze finish representing one of the various surface finishes for this issue. The medal is great looking and is problem free.
