1970 Egypt One Pound Silver Coin Commemorative 1000th Anniversary Al Azhar MS 65
Description: Beautiful lustrous uncirculated, Mint State 65, 1970-1972 (1359-1361 AH) One Egyptian Pound, large and heavy, silver coin. The coin depicts the famous al-Azhar Mosque built by the Fatimid Caliphs in 970-972 AD to be in the center of their new capital of al-Qahira or Cairo the current capital of Egypt. Al Azhar was also a school and is considered the oldest degree granting University in Egypt. The coin depicts the mosque on the obverse with the legend "To Teach You The Book and Wisdom" on top. The reverse is all in beautiful decorative Arabic Calligraphy showing the dates, the denomination, the fact that the coin was struck to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of the mosque, and the fact that it is from The United Arab Republic (the times where Syria and Egypt formed a united country). Just a great looking coin that has a particularly large flan measuring 40 millimeters. It is KM-424 and weighs 25 grams of 0.72 silver. It measures approximately 40 mm in diameter. The coin is graded Mint State 65 (MS 65) by ANACS and comes in a plastic slab so labeled. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: 1970-1972 AD - 1359-1361 AH. Note that the dates in AD and AH do not correspond since the coin commemorates 1000 years in western Calendar.

Size and weight: This is a one pound, weighs 25 grams and is ~40 mm in diameter.

Condition: The coin is graded MS 65 (Mint State 65) by ANACS and comes in a plastic slab so labeled. It is beautiful, lustrous, and without blemishes. It is problem free and has a minimum surface marks. The coin is much better than the photos suggest. Just a great looking coin which would make a great addition to your collection.
