Beautiful 1844 Silver Medal Dedication of the Suspension Foot Bridge Lyon France
Description: A nice silver medal from 1844. This is a medal commemorating the dedication of a suspension foot bridge connecting the right bank of the Rhone River to the Collage in old Lyon France. The bridge was built by the "Compagnie Generale des Ponts Sur le Rhone" or the General Company of Bridges of the Rhone River". The obverse of the medal shows a view of the bridge with the college in the background with the word "A LYON" with the Roman numeral date 1844 in the bottom. The words "Comp ie Gen le des Ponts Sur le Rhone" is written along the edge of the obverse. The reverse shows the personification of the Rhone River holding an oar and leaning on a vessel with water flowing out presumably the rive on a platform with arms in the center. The reverse shows the legend "FURIT SUB PONTIBUS INGENS" or "FURIOUS BELOW THE BRIDGES" above the image along the edge. There is also the notation T.D. ARCH.INV. at the bottom left of the design. The edge of the medal is stamped ARGENT followed by antique prow Paris mint mark. A great looking and very interesting medal to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
