Independent Order of Odd Fellows Vintage Decoration of Chivalry Enameled Medal Rebekah Lodge #324, Edinboro, PA

  • $ 97.77

Description: A beautiful and very interesting enameled medal issued by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows or I. O. O. F. This is the Decoration of Chivalry medal consisting of a cross of ancient design made of white enamel imbedded in a golden frame having mounted on its face a heart of scarlet enamel bearing a golden crown and has engraved on the back the P. M. monogram and the motto of action "Be Just Merciful Honorable and Brave." The bottom of the cross on the back has the engraving PENNSYLVANIA 324 for the Rebekah Lodge #324, Edinboro, PA. (This particular lodge went defunct on December 12, 2003.) The cross hangs from a golden colored pin-back oval piece accented by radiant lines emanating from a central six point star with a brilliant stone (faux diamond?) in its center. The pin back has the number 8 on its back. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but this medal came with several other medals from the early to mid-1900's.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in central Pennsylvania.

Weight and Size: The medal measures ~2 5/8" long, with the top being ~1 3/4" wide and the cross being ~1 3/4" wide and high. The piece weighs ~23.3 grams or about 0.83 ounces.

Artist: Unknown.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked as to the maker.

Condition: The medal is in very good condition. It is a bit soiled and has an old patina, which we did not attempt to clean. It has no chips or losses to the enamel. It has some staining to the gold coloring of the pinback but does not appear to have any losses to either the cross or the pin back. The pin locks well and securely and works as it should. The back shows some staining around the rivets presumably holding the star and the heart. The back is very much golden in color, the dark coloring you see on the back is an artifact of the photography. A great piece to add to your collection. Please view photos for additional condition information and to appreciate the beauty of the medal.
