One Qirsh Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II

Rare About Uncirculated Billon Coin 1831 AD 1223 AH Year 25 Egyptian One Qirsh Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II

  • $ 274.99

Description: A nicely toned about uncirculated or better 1831 (1323 AH/Year 25) One Egyptian Qirsh or one Piastre billon coin. The coin, which was struck in Cairo Egypt during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II depicts the sultan's toughra on the obverse. The Toughra is within a circle and has a rose to its right. The circle is surrounded by a wavy border with dots forming a flower within. The reverse indicates that the coin was struck in Misr (Duriba Fee Misr, current day Fustat on the outskirt of Cairo Egypt) with the date 1223 under it. The year 1223 AH is the year Sultan Mahmud II ascended the throne. The number 25 above the letter "Beh" in "Duriba" indicates that the coin was struck in the 25th year of the sultan's reign or 1831 AD. The reverse has the same style border decoration as the obverse. This is a rather rare coin that is not listed in Karuse's Standard Catalog of World Coins in grades above VF. This coin is a very nice almost uncirculated and nicely toned example that very seldom comes by. It is KM 181, made of billon, weighs ~2.9 grams, and measures approximately ~28 mm in diameter. This is a large and rather tin flan. Please carefully review the scan as it is part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1831 AD - 1223 AH Year 25.

Mint: Egypt.

Size and Weight: This is a One Qirsh, weighs ~2.9 grams and is ~28 mm in diameter.

References: It is KM #181.

Condition: I would grade this coin as a nicely toned about uncirculated or better with all the details being very well preserved. The coin nicely toned and shows minimum wear to the calligraphy. It is much better than the scan shows. It does have minor surface scratches, bag marks, and a few dark spots especially on the obverse, which can be seen in the scan. The coin has wear commensurate with its age and almost circulated status. Please see photo for additional condition information.
