1869R Silver Coin Italian Papal State 10 Soldi Pope Pius IX Year 23 NGC MS 67

  • $ 577.00

Description: A beautiful mint state MS67 silver coin from the Italian Papal States. This is the 1869 AN XXIII Ten Soldi struck during the times of Pope Pius IX by the mint in Rome Italy. The coin depicts the image of the bust of pope Pius IX facing left on the obverse with the legend "PIVS IX.P.M.A.XXIII" surrounding the image. The reverse shows the denomination (10 Soldi) and the date (1869) within a wreath with the mint mark "R" in the bottom splitting the legend "50 Cmi". There is also the legend "STATO*PONTIFICIO" above and around the wreath. This particular coin Anno XXIII 1869 is not listed in my copy of Krause catalog of World Coins, but it does look like KM#1386.1, which only lists an Anno XXIV 1869. The coin should weigh ~2.50 grams of 0.835 silver and measures ~19 mm in diameter. The coin has a reeded edge. This is the rather scarce coin. It is beautiful and has a nice portrait of the Pontiff with purplish-red coloring which can be seen depending on the coins angle under the light, a true beauty. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1869 AN XXIII R.

Mint: Rome, Italy Papal State.

Size and weight: The coin should weigh ~2.5 grams silver and measures ~19 mm in diameter.

References: This coin is not listed with the date 1869 and Anno XXIII in my copy of Krause's Catalog. However, KM 1386.1 lists an 1869 Anno XXIV.

Condition: The coin is graded Mint State MS 67 by NGC and comes in a plastic slab so labeled. It is beautiful with no wear and a beautiful purplish-red hue when angled correctly under the light. It is gorgeous with superb eye appeal. The coin is much better than the photos suggest. Please see photo for additional condition information.
